The rising sun was still glistening on the Atlantic ocean, the morning runners - myself included - were getting their daily fix, the dogs were out, the kids on holiday too and it suddenly seemed unusually crowded close to the public pools. There were police cars, extra security, and then the sound of ululating. 

Being a regular visitor to Cape Town, especially over New Year (because that's when a traditional cricket Test is played), I am used to the extra traffic along this route but I had never seen it so heady. I purposefully slowed down, a little nervous that there had been a terrible accident and then saw some familiar faces. 

Gordon Igesund. Siphiwe Tshabalala. Bernard Parker. Ithumeleng Khune. The fuss was for Bafana Bafana. 

The squad held a training session on the beach and were leaving as I came past. Hundreds of people formed a human speed bump but their cheers did enough to propel me the rest of the way. Nothing unites this country like football, I thought. Nothing. 

I was reminded of that again in the lead up to Bafana's first African Nations' Cup (ANC) warm-up against Norway. Cape Town rarely plays host to international football but when it does, it's done properly. The 2.4 kilometre long fan walk is a mass of yellow shirts, drummers, dressed-up characters on stilts and fire-dancers. The stadium is orderly, seat numbers are respected and the atmosphere raises hairs on arms. 

Even though Bafana squandered chance after chance against the Scandinavians, they drew hysterical cries every time they touched the ball. The Zimbabwean song Shosholoza was belted out, the banners saying "there is Norway you're going to beat us" were there. I have covered both international cricket and rugby and neither gets the same response. 

Dare I say, it was World Cup-esque. Bafana Bafana have enormous home support for this year's Nations' Cup event. Even though Cape Town is not an ANC host and the marketing in other cities has been lacking, expect the home team to be cheered at the five venues, which should produce plenty of fans for other teams too. 

Johannesburg 
Only two match days will be held at the 94,000 seater calabash but they are probably the two most important ones. The tournament will open and close there as was the case during the 2010 World Cup. 

Bafana Bafana begin their campaign for continental glory against Cape Verde ten days from now before Morocco play Angola in the other Group A fixture. If the hosts are back at the biggest stadium in the country on February 10 they would have exceeded all expectations. 

That match will be hosted only eight days after a Red Hot Chilli Peppers concert so concerns are mounting over the state of the pitch rather than the teams that will compete there. The surface suffered after a Lady Gaga concert which was followed by a Soweto derby match. 

Christened Soccer City for the World Cup, the venue has since been named the FNB Stadium due to sponsorship with a local bank but the corporate have relinquished rights for the tournament. So, for the duration of the ANC, it will be known as the National Stadium but feel free to call it by its original (and much more creative) title anyway.

Durban 
Arguably the most beautiful of the World Cup stadiums, Moses Mabhida has not seen too much since the main event. Although local league matches are played there, they are often held in front of fairly empty stands, owing both to the relative unpopularity of the Kwa-Zulu Natal teams and the size of the venue. It was used as a cricket stadium in January 2011 when a twenty-over match between South Africa and India was played there followed by a Bollywood concert. 

It is also the second home of the host team, because it is where Group A will be based. It will also host a quarter-final and a semi-final, confirming its status as one of the big three venues in the country. Durban is known as the most African of South Africa's cities so fairly strong support is expected perhaps particularly for Angola who could have a significant number of countrymen living there. 

Port Elizabeth 
Having recently been given the premier rugby sevens tournament in the country and soon to be the hosts of a super rugby franchise, the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium has been well used compared to some of its counterparts. Also playing host to the ANC is a major coup for the Friendly City because it is often forgotten about when it comes to major events. 

This time it will host the darlings of the continent, Ghana and Group B. Theirs is a pool that also contains Mali and the match between the two teams should decide who finishes top. Port Elizabeth also gets the "kiss-your-sister" third-place playoff. Advertising is evident in the city though, with a marketing strategy taken seriously as it hopes to present itself as a serious contender for big sports tournaments. 

Nelspruit 
After only hosting four fairly insignificant World Cup matches (one of which was Italy against New Zealand though), this is a massive step up for the Mbombela Stadium. Group C will play their matches there and with Zambia and Nigeria as part of it, there will be plenty of interest. 

Ethiopia, who also have a significant expat community in South Africa also appear there, as do Burkina Faso. The other semi-final will be contested there as well. Nelspruit is best known for its proximity to the Kruger National Park and the event will be a chance to market the natural wonders of the country. 

Rustenburg 
Talked about as one of South Africa's best facilities, the Royal Bafokeng Stadium will give the Ivory Coast the princely reception they would want. Group D will be headlined by them although Tunisia, Algeria and Togo all make it one of most competitive sections of the tournament. The competition does not extend further than the quarter-finals as far as this tournament goes but as no strangers to big sport, Rustenburg will not mind.

The match, which took place on January 2, was marred by a stream of taunts and chants towards a number of Milan players and after just 26 minutes of the encounter the Ghanaian took the decision to leave the pitch. He was followed by his team-mates and club officials, with the referee left with no choice but to call off the tie.

Rules on how to proceed in such situations are unclear, leading to speculation the player and club could eventually be penalised for their actions despite the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Giancarlo Abete saying last week that the goverbing body were "prepared to suspend games on a temporary or permanent basis to fight racist abuse."

On Tuesday afternoon however, the FIGC Disciplinary Commission issued a statement which said that - despite the absence of a rule by which to do so - it would not charge the Rossoneri over the matter.

The statement said: "In the current rules no regulation allows for a team to interrupt a match and abandon the pitch if not in accordance with the decisions of the referee.

"However, the essential values that inform the sport and civilised society mean we cannot discipline a gesture of solidarity towards a man who was victim to crass insults exclusively targeted at the colour of his skin."

Chelsea's decision to go to the press created a media storm and left Clattenburg's reputation in tatters, even though he has now been told there is no case to answer after there was found to be no evidence to back up Ramires' claims.

However, when asked if Chelsea would be offering the official a full apology, Chelsea spokesman Steve Adkins said: "We are pleased that the FA recognise the claim lodged by Ramires was done in good faith. They also recognise that Chelsea FC did what was expected on that occasion. We now hope everyone returns to playing football and refereeing without prejudice. We will not be adding to our statement."

Leighton, Prospect's national secretary, said: "Mark Clattenburg deserves a full and unreserved apology from Chelsea. He deserves compensation for loss of earnings, damage to his reputation and stress. In addition, Chelsea should make a sizeable donation to Show Racism the Red Card and Kick It Out to help the fight against racism in football and beyond.

"This was a charge brought on the flimsiest of evidence that should never have got to this stage.''

Mike Riley, general manager of the referees' body, does not believe the referee will look to take any action against Chelsea and just wants to get back in the middle.

"Mark's main interest is to return to refereeing as quickly as possible. His dream is to go to Brazil in 2014 and that's what he is working towards," Riley told Sky Sports News. "In terms of whether Chelsea should apologise, my view is that I hope Chelsea will do the right thing. They have to look at everything that went on, evaluate that and then take the right decisions.

"I have to admire the way Mark has conducted himself throughout this. From the first day, his sole aim was to clear his name and come back to refereeing. You could argue there are lots of avenues open to him but he does not want to pursue any of those.

"What he wants is to go out on Tuesday, Wednesday, next weekend, with a whistle in his hand and referee a game of football."

The eye injury suffered by the Portuguese attacker during last weekend's win at Levante ruled him out of Portugal's friendly in Gabon this week, with Ronaldo suffering "dizzy spells, problems with his vision and a headache" after the game, according to Portuguese FA doctor Henrique Jones.

However, the 27-year-old was back training as normal at Madrid's Valdebebas facility on Thursday, along with Iker Casillas, Raul Albiol, Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane, Pepe and Angel Di Maria, who returned injury-free from international duty with their respective countries.

Midfielder Mesut Ozil, who was ruled out of Germany's friendly with Holland on Wednesday with an ankle problem, also took a full part in the session, as did forward Karim Benzema and Sami Khedira.

The strong turnout of Real players offered a positive outlook for Mourinho ahead of next week's Champions League visit to Manchester City.

Brazilian international Kaka, who played for his country in their 1-1 draw with Colombia in New Jersey on Wednesday, is expected back in Madrid for Friday's training session.

Barcelona attacker Alexis Sanchez will be sidelined for a month after picking up a knee injury during Chile's 3-1 defeat in Serbia on Wednesday.

Sanchez was hurt in a challenge with Serbian midfielder Luka Milivojevic after just 20 minutes of the game, and was replaced by Manchester United's Angelo Henriquez, who went on to score on his full international debut.

Initial reports suggested he had twisted his right knee, but a scan on Thursday revealed ligament damage that will take four weeks to heal.

A Barcelona statement said: "Alexis Sanchez will be out for four weeks. Tests carried out on Thursday confirmed that the player had strained an external lateral ligament in his right leg.

"This means that, if things turn out as expected, the forward will miss seven or eight games for FC Barcelona (Real Zaragoza, Spartak Moscow, Levante, Alaves, Athletic Bilbao, Benfica, Betis and Atletico Madrid)."

If the former Udinese winger, who has a history of coming back injured from international duty, is on track with his rehabilitation, he may be fit to return against Valladolid on December 22.

There is better news for Blaugrana fans, though with club captain Carles Puyol set to return.

Puyol has been training alongside those Barca players not away with their national teams this week and although he has yet to receive a full all-clear from the club's medical staff, the centre-back is expected to be ready to play against Zaragoza this weekend if required.

Alex Song (back) and Adriano Correia (thigh) have also been continuing their recoveries this week. Song is more likely to feature in Saturday's game, for which Sergio Busquets is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season at Real Mallorca last weekend.

League leaders Leicester consolidated their position with a 1-0 victory at home to Brighton and Hove Albion courtesy of Andy King's 10th-minute goal.

Nigel Pearson's men, who drew with Birmingham City at the weekend, remain on top of the table with 25 points from 12 matches played.

Cardiff came from behind to snatch a dramatic 2-1 win over Watford, who had two players sent off at Cardiff City Stadium.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has revealed he remains confident his side will qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

City have endured a poor start to their European campaign, losing 3-2 to Real Madrid at the Bernabeu before labouring to a draw against German champions Borussia Dortmund at home.

A slow start in what is arguably the competition's trickiest group has left qualification for the next stage far from certain, but the 47-year-old is upbeat about his side's chances.

He told reporters: "We played against Real in Madrid, so it is difficult not to concede chances and it's important not to concede a lot of shots in Europe.

"We had a bad game against Dortmund but it is important we don't give away so many chances to score. We don't have experience as a club but all of our players have Champions League experience.

"Maybe as a club, we need more experience, but we have good players and that's why we should be in the second stage.

"We still have a chance to go through, but we must take our chances."

The Manchester club will be looking to kick-start their campaign with a win against Ajax on Wednesday evening, but the Italian has warned against complacency at the Amsterdam ArenA.

"People think it will be easy on Wednesday but Ajax have a good young team and will play well. It is more difficult away from home," he added.

"Every group game is difficult in the Champions League but we should continue our way and if we play like this, we will win."

Cristiano Ronaldo has been given the green light by Real Madrid to join up with the Portugal squad to prepare for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers after tests showed the shoulder injury picked up during Sunday night's 2-2 draw at Barcelona was not serious.

Ronaldo fell awkwardly on his shoulder after attempting a bicycle kick midway through the second half with the score at 2-1 to Barcelona. He was loudly jeered by home fans inside the stadium, but picked himself up to fire in the equaliser just moments later for his second goal of the game.

Despite being noticeably troubled by the knock, the former Manchester United attacker completed the 90 minutes and travelled back to the Spanish capital with the Real squad on Sunday night.

After being examined on Monday morning at his Madrid home, Ronaldo was given the all-clear to join up with his national squad.

"Cristiano Ronaldo will today join the rest of the Portugal squad," a Real Madrid statement on Monday lunchtime said. "The Real Madrid forward, who suffered a sprained left shoulder during the match against Barcelona, was examined at his home this morning by Real Madrid doctors, who have said that his injury is not serious and that he does not need to undergo more tests in a hospital.

"Real Madrid have already informed the Portuguese Football Federation that Cristiano Ronaldo will join their national team squad today in Obidos. Once there, the Whites' player will be kept under observation and will have no problem in playing on Friday in Moscow for Portugal against Russia in the World Cup 2014 qualifier."

Euro 2012 semi-finalists Portugal also host Northern Ireland in Oporto next Tuesday in their bid to qualify for Brazil 2014.

Rooney scored 35 goals for his club last year, but he is yet to open his account in a stop-start campaign in which he has made six appearances despite spending a month on the sidelines with a gashed thigh.

Thirteen United players have now got off the mark for the season, but while Rooney - the fourth-highest scorer in United's history - is not one of them, he says the team is the most important thing.

"As long as we keep winning, I'm not concerned. If it comes, it comes. We've got other players who can score goals for us," Rooney said.

He played at the tip of a midfield diamond in Sunday's 3-0 win over Newcastle, a role he also occupied in the Capital One Cup victory against the Magpies and the Champions League clash with Cluj, and the 26-year-old is happy with his new position.

He added: "I was involved in the whole game. I'm not one who won't put the work in and I will do my best for the team. That's all I can do."

Rooney felt the clean sheet was one of the most important element of United's win at Newcastle.

He said: "We didn't defend well enough in the first few league games - not just the back four but the whole team. But we were brilliant. They are a really big team, a physical team, so we knew we had to defend our box really well. We managed to do that. There was a focus about us today and we need to do that for the rest of the season if we're going to be successful.

"It was a great result for us. Everyone knows it's one of the hardest games of the season  Newcastle away  but we came here and defended brilliantly, scored three goals and, overall, fully deserved the victory."

The wait is over for the start of the 2012-13 Premier League season, with a host of new players including Arsenal's Lukas Podolski and Liverpool's Fabio Borini making their debuts on Saturday.

Gerrard, who was also full of praise for new manager Brendan Rodgers, believes Liverpool cannot find themselves languishing down in eighth place again this term and must make sure they return to Europe's elite for the first time since the 2009-10 campaign.

Rodgers is expected to bring a more attacking style to Liverpool this season which excites Gerrard, and he hopes the club will no longer find themselves frustrated by the opposition - an issue which led to the Reds drawing more home games than any other side in the Premier League last season.

"We'll see a bolder Liverpool team - and more exciting too," Gerrard is quoted as saying by the Sun. "It's not just been these last few days that I've had a chance to learn about the new manager, he's been in touch with me since he came in.

"He has made me aware of where he's at and what he's trying to do - I've been really impressed with him. His man-management is fantastic and if he can do that with all the players in the squad, then it can be really good for the club.

"I don't think a team has ever gone from eighth to first. But there's still other big targets for us to achieve short-term and that's getting in that top four again - that's the priority. And if you perform hard enough and well enough, it will come. That is the only way you get it and I am confident we will.

"But the other players have got to think how I think and use the hurt of what happened to make up for it. That is the only way you can do it. I honestly think we will get in the top four because if we play like we did in a lot of games last season and take our chances, we will be high up the table.

"The idea is to improve and have some fun along the way in the cup competitions, like we did last year. We were brilliant at times in the league too, it's just we never got out of them what we deserved. But there were times you would come off thinking 'no wonder we are sixth, seventh and eighth'.

"It was frustrating but if you look at the season, you can't use it as an excuse for finishing eighth. It wasn't good enough. Over the years sometimes Liverpool have come up against a certain type of opposition and shown them too much respect. But maybe we have had to, because of the style we've been asked to play.

"There were times under previous managers when we showed too much respect, but Brendan wants us to play like a big team. He's been coaching for 20 years and dealing with big players. I've been impressed with his knowledge and how he's dealt with me. The players who have worked with him over the past few weeks have said the same."

"There is a lot of hard work to be done sharpish. But already in training, in only my second session, we are doing team shape and he is telling players what he expects movement wise.

"We are Liverpool, we can't finish eighth. We have to put that right."

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed to MUTV on Friday that Manchester United have made a bid for Van Persie, while it is widely reported that Manchester City and Juventus have also made concrete offers.

Arsenal would appear pessimistic about their chances of keeping their captain given the confirmation on Saturday morning that Van Persie will not be part of the travelling party when the squad fly out to Malaysia.

However, it is clear that none of the offers has met with the Gunners' approval and Wenger, who says the striker's absence from the tour is down to a need to work on his fitness, remains hopeful that the Netherlands international will stay at the Emirates.

"For me, Van Persie is one of the best strikers in the world, if not the best, and my desire is to keep him at the club," he told Arsenal Player. "As for the rest, I will do what is in the best interests of Arsenal Football Club. That, at the moment, is where we are. There is not a lot more to say than that.

"What is always important is that Arsenal is happy - Arsenal is 30 million (supporters) and what is important is that these people are happy. If you can combine the happiness of the players and all our fans it is even better and that is what we try to achieve."

Asked if he was confident Van Persie would stay, he added: "I do not want to talk too much about that situation because I believe it is also important that every individual player is happy."

Wenger has already indicated that he is eager to avoid a repeat of last season's transfer business, when the late sales of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri left preparations for the new season in disarray, but he is confident that Van Persie would maintain a professional approach should he see out the final year of his contract at Arsenal.

"Robin was an exceptional leader last year, but we know how much we had to fight to come third because we missed out the start of the season," he said. "After seven games we had lost four and we have learned that for us it is vital for us to focus on the start of the season rather than on any transfers.

China is gearing up to perform its first-ever manned space docking Monday (June 18), a feat that would put it in the company of history’s two greatest spacefaring nations, the United States and Russia.

China’s Shenzhou 9 space capsule — which launched Saturday (June 16) carrying three astronauts, including the country’s first female spaceflyer — is expected to link up with the unmanned Tiangong 1 space lab around 3 p.m. Monday Beijing time (3 a.m. EDT; 0700 GMT), according to Chinese media reports.

To date, the only two countries to pull off a manned orbital docking are the United States and the Soviet Union/Russia, which first did so in 1966 and 1969, respectively.

Shenzhou 9 will dock with Tiangong 1 twice, with the first hookup being automated. At some point, the two spacecraft will separate, and the three taikonauts, as China’s astronauts are known, will perform the second docking manually.

Forty-six-year-old Jing Haipeng leads the taikonaut crew, which also includes Liu Wang, 42, and 33-year-old Liu Yang, China’s first female astronaut. All are members of the Communist Party of China and former pilots with the People’s Liberation Army; Jing flew on China’s last manned spaceflight, which took place in 2008.

Two of the taikonauts will live aboard Tiangong 1 during the 13-day mission, while one will stay aboard Shenzhou 9 at all times in case of emergency, Chinese officials have said.

Shenzhou-9′s flight is considered a key step in China’s plan to build a permanently staffed space station in Earth orbit. The nation hopes to have a 60-ton station and up and running by 2020. (For comparison, the International Space Station weighs about 430 tons.)

While Shenzhou 9′s flight is China’s first attempt at a crewed space docking, the nation has successfully linked up two robotic spacecraft in orbit. In November, the unmanned Shenzhou 8 craft docked twice with Tiangong 1 before returning safely to Earth.

Shenzhou 9′s mission is China’s fourth manned spaceflight, following taikonaut launches in 2003, 2005 and 2008. Another manned mission to Tiangong 1 — which launched to orbit in September 2011 — could come later this year, Chinese officials have said.

Ferdinand was barracked with every touch of the ball at Stamford Bridge for comments made about John Terry in relation the Chelsea defender's impending court case over an alleged racially aggravated public order offence involving his brother, Anton. Patrice Evra was also a target for the jeers.

Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas said: "You have to condemn it when there is discriminatory, aggressive behaviour but you don't expect opposing fans to cheer your players.

"This is a normal situation in the Premier League. We know the situations. We know we have to play a part.

"If we want to push on this sequence of events to extend in the future, it's up to us. It's up to me and it's up to you in the press.

"If you want to give importance to situations like this, if you let people take responsibility, assume responsibility and the fans and the knowledge that maybe what they were doing makes no sense, it's better but to try to prevaricate isn't right.''

Ferdinand shrugged off the booing on Twitter: "I got booed by the cfc fans today,....well done guys thanks for inspiring me & the lads! That's like fuel to me!''

When asked if it was a relief Terry was not going to be playing, Ferdinand had replied: "Not really. I couldn't care less if he played or not. I just think about playing for Manchester United and winning the game. I let the media talk about it, go on about it and create the storm.

"Anton is my little brother. We have grown up together and I looked after him when we were kids. If something is going to affect him and hurt him, I am always there as a shoulder to lean on. In moments like this, when things are so public and you can't really say anything, it can be frustrating.

"For my family, yes, it has been tough. At the end of the day, my brother has not brought any accusations to anyone. He is not the accused. But he has had to sit there and take abuse from some small-minded people, which has been very disappointing."

Capello told Italian television he fundamentally disagreed with the removal of Terry as skipper, as the Chelsea defender awaits trial on a charge of racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand when the teams met in the Premier League at Loftus Road in October.

The 31-year-old pleaded not guilty to the charges at a hearing last week and his trial was set for July 9, eight days after the end of Euro 2012, forcing the FA to act. But Capello, who earns a reputed £6 million a year as England coach, is not happy at the turn of events.

"I completely disagree with the FA about the John Terry decision and I have told that to the chairman (David Bernstein)," he is said to have told Italian television station Rai 1.

"I told him that I don't think someone can be punished until it becomes official. I considered and still consider Terry as the England captain. I think we first should wait for the trial conclusion.

"The court will decide. It's going to be civil justice, not sports justice, to decide if John Terry committed that crime. And I thought it fair that John Terry keeps the captain's armband."

Terry is currently injured and was in the stands to watch Chelsea draw 3-3 Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. The home support booed Rio Ferdinand - brother of Anton - during the match.

Terry was stripped of the captaincy on Friday, the FA releasing a statement that read: "Following the decision to adjourn the court case against John Terry to July, The Football Association confirm he will not captain the England team until the allegations against him are resolved.

"The FA Board expected the trial to be concluded prior to the European Championship. Further to Wednesday's confirmation that the trial will not take place until after the tournament, the board has discussed the matter in detail and has collectively decided it is in the interests of all parties that John has the responsibilities of captaincy removed at this time.

"This decision has been taken due to the higher profile nature of the England captaincy, on and off the pitch, and the additional demands and requirements expected of the captain leading into and during a tournament."

Terry is still free to be selected to play for England, which has raised questions about harmony within the squad, especially if Rio Ferdinand is also picked.

Friday's move by the FA was the second time Chelsea's captain has had the England armband taken from him. In February 2010, Capello sacked him as captain after allegations he had an extra-marital affair with Wayne Bridge's former girlfriend.

However, with only five points separating them from fourth place, Wenger insists there is still all to play for over the remaining 15 matches of the current campaign as his men look to leapfrog both Liverpool and Newcastle, who play later in the weekend, with victory over struggling Blackburn at Emirates Stadium.

"I don't look at the table. Never. Even when we are in front I never look at the table because I know where we are. It is very tight," said Wenger.

"We are in a competition with Liverpool, who have not won the league for 20 years, but before they have won in 18 times in 20 years, so it [being outside the top four] can happen. You have always to be humble and fight hard and support your team. That is all you can do."

To be precise, Liverpool's record shows they won the old First Division 11 times in the space of 18 seasons, from 1972-73 to 1989-90.

Wenger has been subjected to some harsh criticism by a section of supporters this season.

"I am just worried to do as well as I can for this club, every day. I will let other people judge how good it is. At the moment it is a bit under scrutiny, but it does not stop me from being as motivated as I have always been to do well for the club.

"To do well for the club is to play the football I want to play and to win football games."

"At the moment we are in the Champions League, and only Chelsea (of the other English clubs) is in it. Last year we were in four competitions and I had the same press conference - it was all doom and gloom. All, for the whole season. Ramires, 24, picked up a medial knee ligament problem in the second half of the fourth-round tie when he tried to block a shot from Clint Hill. A Chelsea club statement said: "He is expected to be out for three to four weeks."

Brazil international Ramires has been one of the most impressive performers in a difficult season for Chelsea, making 19 league starts and contributing four goals.

1. Where You’ve Been

You’ve always kept your location up to date on Facebook, ensuring everyone knows when you change cities — but you’re not interested in geotagging. Watch out, because your exact location can still be picked up by Facebook and broadcasted.

One of the more prominent design features in Facebook’s new Timeline is the “Maps” feature, which gathers the meta data from a user’s location and prominently displays check-ins, life events, photos, and the like on the map. The issue is, for those who aren’t necessarily keen on sharing discrete location details, this feature is virtually unavoidable. According to Facebook’s privacy policy: “We receive data from the computer, mobile phone or other device you use to access Facebook. This may include your IP address, location, the type of browser you use, or the pages you visit.” This data is collected every time, even when a friend of yours has GPS turned on and tags you in a picture she’s uploading from her mobile phone.

Even if you’re stringent about your whereabouts not making it to a highly visible plane, Facebook has already gathered data from you retroactively, ensuring that every time you’ve changed your city location — or listed your home town– it will show up on the map as well.

2. What You’re Listening To

You just downloaded Spotify and you’re really excited to get started. You signed up and were asked to link to Facebook before launching the app, so you clicked the boxes and everything seems ready. But don’t click play on that MC Hammer track just yet…

Since September, Spotify has required that new users sign in through Facebook, thanks to a partnership forged after the music giant hit the U.S. Essentially, anytime a regular Spotify user turns on the app and clicks play, whether via desktop or through mobile, the app can beam information right into Facebook and broadcast it to friends without prior notice. In response to major backlash, Spotify now includes a “Private Listening” mode, which blocks sharing immediately to Facebook. However, it will turn off after a restart or an extended period of time.

The only way to circumvent the compulsory posting is to turn it off permanently in both places. Spotify’s desktop app does have a “turn off publishing to Facebook” within its settings, but the only way to ensure posting does not occur is to revoke Spotify’s publishing abilities within Facebook apps.

3. When You’re Creeping

That girl you met at the event you went to last week. Your ex from college. Your worst enemy from middle school. Odds are, they’re all on Facebook, and you can’t resist the urge to creep. Just remember that Facebook is watching, too.

Naturally, anything you do on Facebook is seen and gathered by Facebook, and creeping on people is no exception. Facebook specifically tracks all clicks done within its platform in order to better tailor an experience for the user. Do you ever wonder why certain people show up in your feed, while others are hardly ever reported on? That’s your creeping doing its work. Visit your frenemy’s page enough times, and he or she will end up gracing your feed more often than you may like.

Don’t worry, Facebook does not specifically share this data with other users, though it will assume that this person is important in your life. Marking someone as a VIP can lead to their appearances more often in your advertisements or apps in addition to the extra face time on the feed.

4. Where You Run

Social running is all the rage these days, and you’re ready to load up your iPhone with RunKeeper, connect it to Facebook and get to stepping. But there’s more, and it has to do with that sneaky little GPS…

Runkeeper is one of the poster children for Facebook’s new “frictionless” user experience. A social network for avid (and aspiring) runners, Runkeeper packs sophisticated technology usually reserved for GPS watches and other athletic gear into a handy iPhone application and has the option of linking material to Facebook. Except, with the Open Graph, linking gives companies an opportunity to simply push all of the info that they collect into a user’s Timeline. And in this case, that means valuable GPS data.

Say that you go on a run with Runkeeper around the park. The GPS data routes the run you made and then pushes it to Facebook so your friends can see where you’ve been and for how long. This may not be much of a problem for you, but what if one day you forget to turn off Runkeeper and go to work? Anywhere you go from that point on is at risk of becoming common knowledge among your social circle, which can be unnerving at best and dangerous at worst. Runkeeper does a great service for those motivated for fitness, but in participating in the Open Graph, the information is fair game.

5. Your Saturday Night Plans

Your local bar is having a comedy night, and you have to RSVP on Facebook to get on the guest list. But when you click “Attending,” your plans can be broadcast to your social network — whether you realize it or not.

One of the trickier features of Facebook is the “sponsored stories” section, which is a particular form of advertising. Companies can sponsor particular Facebook actions, called “stories,” that double as advertising for a brand. However, this also means that your information could be used as an advertisement for another brand.

“Sponsored Stories” are a possibility every time you like a brand or location or respond positively to a public event. When you do this, companies can tap into your friends and let them know that you like or are attending an event — with the hopes of getting them involved, too. Liking a brand or attending its event automatically makes your information available for brand ambassadorship, and you can become an advocate for the event or the brand without implicitly signing up.

6. When You’ve Slacked on Your Diet

You have a Fitbit and you’re ready to get your connected fitness in gear. You allow your account to connect with Facebook so you can broadcast your successes to friends and family, but the Open Graph does change things.

Fitbit is not currently on Facebook’s list of fully-adopted Open Graph apps, but its potential (and partnership with Runkeeper) can create quite an issue for users who are concerned about privacy. The nuances of Facebook’s Open Graph mean that everything is done for the user as soon as permission is granted, rather than approving every singular action within an app. Combine that with an app that already makes those decisions for you, and the possibility of sharing information you actually don’t want to share is high.

The key issue with Fitbit is that it already uploads very personal information automatically whenever the portable device is near its connected docking station. Combined with Open Graph, data could be broadcasted to friends without even logging into Facebook.

7. What News Articles You Just Read

A friend read an article that catches your eye through the Washington Post Social Reader. You click on the title and realize that the app requires permission before linking to the article. You may think little of it and click through to the article, but Facebook watches as you keep reading.

The main news app that has adopted Facebook’s Open Graph structure is the Washington Post Social Reader. You may have already seen the app in your News Feed, highlighting some articles read by friends that could be of interest to you. However, if you’re interested in one of the articles, you’re going to have to allow the app to access your personal information.

That can be an inconvenience for some, but the real issue lies after you read that first article. Because of the app’s structure, you aren’t prompted whether you want to share a particular article with your peers. So, once you begin clicking around the Post’s website, all of your articles become fair game for posting onto someone else’s mini-feed. The result is, from that point forward, even without accessing the app directly through Facebook, your connection to your reading habits is already cemented and anyone can access it.
